Since the late 1960s, Clark has developed a unique and groundbreaking practice spanning photo-based work, text, collage, installation, and sculptural assemblages. Fuelling her over six-decade practice are questions of identity formation and their connection to our points of origin. Witness will bring together four significant bodies of work that stretch from the 1990s to the present, many of them seen here for the first time.

June Clark: Witness will be presented in tandem with another solo exhibition of the artist’s work at the Art Gallery of Ontario titled June Clark: Unrequited Love.

Gower, who has lived and worked internationally for many years, employs a range of media to investigate postwar material and intellectual histories, particularly as they connect to art and architecture.

Terence Gower: Embassy will feature over a decade-worth of work stemming from his investigation into the diplomatic architecture of the United States. Four multi-part installations form a larger study of American embassy buildings that have played important roles in recent international events in Baghdad, Havana, Saigon, and Ottawa. These expansive artistic constellations, including archival documents, sculptures, videos, and works on paper, are the outcome of the artist’s extensive research process.

Created especially for young children, Yassama and the Beaded Calabash is the story of a young girl who, with the help of the old Baobab tree, saves her village from drought and delivers a powerful lesson about the importance of respecting and honouring Mother Earth.

Rooted in African oral tradition, acclaimed artist Lua Shayenne invites children into storytelling as active participants through rhythmic language, lively song, engaging movement and dance accompanied by live drumming and a rich percussive score.
